Together with Race Online and the BBC, we’ll be encouraging onliners to give an hour to inspire and help someone else use the internet, and offliners to spend an hour giving the internet a go at a local event.

It’s the fifth year of the Get online week campaign, and we’re aiming to hold more than 2,000 events across the country, helping tens of thousands of people to get to grips with computers and the internet.

The Guidance Centre (in-house Walk-in Centre) and Outreach Services

We at our full-fledged Guidance Centre offer free and impartial information, Advice and Guidance (Career Advice) to individuals on learning and work.

We have professionally trained (NVQ Level 3 & 4 – Advice & Guidance), experienced and friendly advisers to assist employed and unemployed clients. The advisers are equipped with updated quality information and knowledge required to meet the needs of our clients. We pride ourselves with equality of opportunity for every client. Our qualified advisers also work at Jobcentre Plus and other outreach locations to render the career advice, including initial assessments for literacy, numeracy and IT. These advisers are well equipped with laptops (with internet access) and therefore, provide up to date prompt services to the beneficiaries.

We support our clients with structured one-to-one IAG interview sessions that enable them to make well-informed choices to be able to overcome barriers to learning and employment. The clients are assessed through Basic Skills assessment (Literacy & Numeracy) or ESOL assessment and IT, where required, which in turn, helps in making informed decisions for future action.

The Guidance Centre is committed to high standards of IAG delivery and has achieved the Matrix Standard accreditation. We assist our clients to return to learning after long-term unemployment, with an aim to encourage clients to develop a more positive attitude towards their life, motivation and improved self-confidence. Our advisers assist the clients in taking up intensive assessments such as Adult Direction and/or Skills Health Check, which help to identify key skills, aptitude and the ability to make career decisions.  The Guidance Centre has a walk-in facility to make use of these services without taking prior appointment.

Equipped with broadband-enabled computers, The Guidance Centre is available for clients to search information about training, courses and jobs. We also provide assistance to those who are not familiar with IT.

Our structured IAG sessions emphasise on individual needs through appropriate referrals / signposting to:

• Learning (Courses)
• CV writing
• Job search
• Employability skills training
• Work placements or voluntary work experience
• Motivational and personal development workshops
• Suitable referrals / signposting to other organisations where required

The centre possesses a library rich with information about universities, college courses and careers. It is well equipped with videos, CD-ROMs and various computer programs, which can help learners practise their skills and find out information about specific areas of education and individual development.

The government’s ambitious £5 billion back to work programme began this month. It is the largest and the most challenging government funded welfare to work programme which is based on payment by results‖ after 26 weeks of sustained job.

5E is delivering for 2 Primes – Ingeus and Maximus in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. It will require utmost dedication and perseverance in convincing clients to develop skills and qualifications to help them find sustainable jobs. It’s also a financial risk for the company as our major payments come only after the client has been in employment for a long period of time (sometimes two years).

According to the latest figures released by the ONS, there are almost four million workless households across the UK. All these people need our help. Finding sustainable employment for clients is not just about putting clients into jobs but also about changing mind-sets. We need to convince clients that work pays and only then will most clients be willing to break free of the barriers that make them dependent on the benefit cycle and get them into employment through encouragement and by providing support and guidance on an ongoing process.

On February 25, hundreds of pro-testers from Haringey Alliance for Public Services demonstrated outside Haringey Civic Centre as council leaders voted on a cuts package.  The protestors fear that such cuts could see the loss of jobs and many of its local services. Senior citizens and pensioners from local day  centres and youngsters from education institutions and youth clubs stood shoulder to shoulder in their opposition to the cuts.

Haringey councillors approved £84m cuts from a total budget of £273m over the next three years. The council biggest cuts – worth £46m – would take place in 2011-12.  Services for young people and elderly people will be scaled back, and less money will be spent on libraries and leisure centres.  More than 1,000 jobs will be lost, from a total of 4,500 staff, as a result of the spending cuts. Many more jobs will be lost by businesses and services that indirectly face the axe due to spending cuts.  “We understand that cuts need to be made, but we only hope that the disadvantaged and the vulnerable are spared,” said Raj Doshi, Managing Director, 5E Ltd.  Some staff members from 5E also joined the rally to represent clients who would lose many of these services and the job loss that would occur to businesses in the council.   “Our clients need training and develop-ment to be able to compete in the job market. These cuts could be detrimental to their growth,”   said Salim Ahmed, Operational Manager, 5E Ltd.

5E’s annual award ceremony took place on November 24, 2010 at Selby Centre, Tottenham.

5E Ltd and ICDI hosted this grand event to celebrate the success of all of its learners on various funded  programmes. Our clients on the Personal Best Programme put their best foot forward by presenting to the crowd of 150 learners, their own construction of the good (and bad) customer service demonstrations. Salim  Ahmed, Performance  Manager, 5E Ltd said, “It’s was a brilliant idea. It shows that our l earners not only have the capacity to succeed for themselves, but to share that knowledge and insight with the wider community.”

Then, the students were awarded certificates of merit by various funders who attended the event amidst a loud applause from their fellow learners and staff. “At 5E we believe the efforts should be rewarded. This not just aspires the awardees to do better in their lives but also motivates the others,” said Raj Doshi, managing director, 5E Ltd.  Later Mr Doshi also highlighted the difficulties within the current governmental climate as the funding cuts are underway and opened the floor to questions from learners in order to raise awareness of the wider issues of our provision and services. The event was concluded with a fantastic full course Indian lunch.
