A National Vocational Qualification or NVQ helps you to develop your skills and gain the knowledge required to help you to do a job effectively. You might want to take an NVQ to increase your skills with your current job or to gain new skills to move into a different area. They cover the key aspects of a particular occupation, including current understanding of good practice, future requirements that may affect your work and knowledge that enables productive performance in the workplace. The qualifications are based on national standards at Levels 1 to 5 on the National Qualifications Framework. The national standards set the skills that you need to be able to achieve to work at each level so it is easy to see how to progress from your current position. The framework shows how different types of qualifications compare, in terms of the demands they place on learners.
Who are they for?
Our NVQs can be taken by full-time employees or by unemployed people. You may like to speak to one of our friendly advisers to enquire about eligibility requirements for funding.
How do they work?
The skills and knowledge you already have count towards your qualification. NVQs range from foundation Level 1 programmes to more advanced Level 4. They are divided into different units that reflect various aspects of a particular job and are achieved through both assessment and training. The assessments are usually done by observing you in the workplace and by asking you various questions to check your understanding of work related issues.
Candidates also have to produce a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they are competent in meeting the NVQ standards. NVQs do not have to be completed within a specified time limit but will depend on individual circumstances.
When you have completed the appropriate units to a specified level of competence you will be awarded with an NVQ. You will receive advice, support and guidance from experienced and competent assessors to achieve your chosen NVQ qualification.
