Also known as BCS Level 1 Certificate for IT Users, ECDL Essentials is the first of three stages leading to a full ECDL qualification – the other two stages are ECDL Extra and ECDL Advanced.

The ECDL certificate (European Computer Driving License), is a globally recognised ICT and digital literacy certification. According to ECDL Foundation – the non-profit organisation that provides the qualification – the ECDL certification is recognised and supported by governments, computer societies, international organisations and commercial corporations.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the main concepts of IT
  • Know how to use the computer and manage files
  • Understand the basics of the Internet and e-mail
  • Know the purpose/structure/features and test arrangements for ECDL Essentials
  • Prepare and practise skills for the module tests
  • Take the tests for the ECDL Modules 1, 2 and 7

Duration
42 – 150 hours working at your own pace

Progression
Taking this course counts towards the following qualifications:

  • The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
  • ITQ

Course Content
The course has three sections:

1. Three learndirect courses:

  • Concepts of Information Technology
  • Using the Computer and Managing
  • Information and Communication

2. In the second section of the course, you’ll learn more about the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) and the British Computer Society (BCS), which administers and awards it in the UK.

You then take a “skill check” to see whether you have built the IT skills and knowledge you need to pass the
assessment and to identify any areas that need more practice.

3. The final part of the course contains the three ECDL Module Tests, Modules 1, 2 and 7, which you need to pass to
be awarded the BCS Level 1 Certificate for IT Users. This recognised qualification puts you on the path
to achieving the ECDL.
